Team Oldham Values Assembly

Every two weeks the Year 6 team get together and celebrate our learning and the values that are most important to us as a team. Each Values assembly we  recognise the Active Learner of the fortnight. This is a child who displays the many wonderful qualities of an active learner, including, being organised, focused, able to clearly discuss their learning, ask questions, support others, act on feedback given, set goals and achieve them, reflect on their learning and show a positive growth mindset. We have changed our focus and are looking for students who display the most Respect. Respect for yourself, respect for others, respect for property and environment. Respect comes in many shapes and forms - think - how can we show respect?  What are the following children doing that have earned themselves this reward? In Week 8, it was a pleasure to award the following students from our class. Active Learner Award: Mayling Respect: Tayla and Valen

A sneak peak into the Intermediate Department....

Image
.....today was such an exciting and engaging day!  We got a sneak preview into what learning would be like next year in the Intermediate department today. Each of the Year 6 classes rotated around a variety of exciting activities with the Year 7/8 teachers. Room 21 went to Mr Vella and Miss Albert first and created Jacob's Ladders (a cool wooden toy) as part of their introduction to Design & Technology.  Then it was off to see Mr Gover where the children got a taste of Robotics and Minecraft Education (a real highlight). After lunch they went to Food Technology with Mrs Buckley and Mrs Kimber and made pizza (yum!). And what better way to finish the day than with Physical Education and Mrs Sowter. The children are given a wide range of learning and leadership opportunities at MVS and it's fantastic that our Year 6 children can get a taste of what their learning will be like in the next couple of years. A reminder that the Parents Open Evening is on this Thursd...

Writing - Information Reports

This week we have begun focusing on Information Reports in Writing.  We thought as a class it would be really beneficial to 'unpack' what an Information Report actually looks like. What does the author include in the report to make it an Information Report? We discovered that Information Reports have a lot in them!  We began by identifying the correct structure (introduction, main body, and conclusion). We then highlighted subject-specific nouns, descriptive verbs, technical vocabulary, and cause and effect complex sentences. This morning we got into pairs and read Ruaumoko Rages (an information report that combines a Moari Legend with the Science behind how a Volcano Erupts). After highlighting all the criteria included in the report, we will write our own information report on this topic. It was a fantastic feeling to wander around the room and over-hear the children's conversations while highlight the parts of this report. To hear them discussing that the sentence ...
